Re: Mazama High School Controversial Topic Lesson
The Klamath County School District is aware of concerns raised regarding a Mazama High School teacher and allegations that instructional content may have included politically motivated or one-sided perspectives. The District takes such matters seriously. In accordance with District policy, applicable state and federal laws, and collective bargaining agreements, the District is conducting a review to determine whether professional and instructional standards have been appropriately maintained.
The District recognizes that classroom instruction may, at times, involve current events or controversial topics. When these subjects arise, staff are expected to ensure that instruction remains balanced, fact-based, and conducive to critical thinking and respectful discourse. The Klamath County School District does not endorse, promote, or oppose any political ideology or position within its curriculum or instructional practices. Our objective is to maintain a learning environment in which all students feel safe, respected, and free to express differing viewpoints.
District employees, as private citizens, retain their constitutional right to freedom of speech under the First Amendment. The District’s review will be limited to the employee’s conduct in their capacity as a public educator. Consistent with due process and principles of fairness, no conclusions will be drawn until the review is complete and all relevant facts have been thoroughly considered.
