What is changing this school year?

The state of Oregon is implementing a statewide ban on cellular devices in K-12 schools. Starting Sept. 2, students will not be permitted to use cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, and any device capable of accessing a cellular network during the instructional school day. Devices must be powered off and either kept at home or put away until school is dismissed. Restrictions do not apply while students are traveling to and from school on buses, but are in effect on instructional field trips.

Devices include:
-- Cell phones
-- Tablets
-- Smartwatches
-- Any device that can access a cellular network.

Why is the district making this change?

We want classrooms to be distraction-free so students can focus on learning, connecting with each other, and being present. Research shows too much cell phone use can hurt focus, increase stress, and impact mental health. This change also aligns and complies with the new Oregon rule directing Oregon schools to ban student use of cell phones and devices during the school day to support learning and well-being.

Can my child still bring their phone to school?

Yes. Phones and other devices may be brought to school but must remain powered off and stored away during the instructional day. The no-device rule applies to all district campuses including private vehicles parked on school property during the instructional day.

What if I need to reach my child during the day?

Families can always call the main office, and staff will make sure messages get to students quickly. In urgent situations, we will get your child right away.

What about after school?

Student may use their devices after the school day ends.

Are there any exceptions?

Yes — but only in rare cases, such as if a device is written into a student’s IEP or 504 plan as a medical device. Exemptions must require the device to serve an essential function not easily served by a device compliant with the new rules.

How will this be enforced?

Teachers and staff will enforce the new rules.  Devices seen or heard during the instructional day will be held in the office for pickup at the end of the day or by a parent/guardian.

We’ll focus on reteaching, not punishment. Typically:
·         First time: Device held until the end of the day, parent notified.
·         Second time: Parent picks up the device.
·         Third time: Parent meeting, device must stay home or be checked in daily.
·         Fourth time+: Student may be referred to the office for insubordinate behavior. Further violations follow insubordinate behavior/disruption of the learning environment protocols.

How can families help?

-- Talk with your child about why this rule exists — it’s about giving them the best environment to learn and thrive.
-- Encourage them to see school as a “phone-free zone.”
-- Remind them they can still connect with you through the office if needed.
