Some Things To Know. . .
Start Dates
7th Grade Grizzly Camp/Orientation will be Monday, August 31st. On this day students will receive their schedules, lockers, locks and all other information they will need. It will be an introduction day where students will learn everything they need to know about our school and how their new schedules will work. (Only 7th graders will attend on this day.)
8th Graders will begin on Tuesday, September 1st where they will get their schedules and information. (All students attend on from here on out.)
Open House
This event is for all parent and family members to attend to meet all of your students’ teachers and staff. You may tour the school to see where everything is located and visit with office staff if you have any further questions. This is also a great time to come into the office complete any paperwork and pay off any fees if you haven’t already. Our Open House this year will be on Thursday, September 3rd from 5:00-6:30 pm. We will open the doors at 5:00 pm and have a short presentation from our Principal Mr. Fast, and also our Superintendent Mrs. Cole.
Bell Schedule
Monday through Thursday: 8:20 AM – 3:16 PM
Friday: 8:20 AM – 2:16 PM
Students can enter the building and have breakfast at 8:00 AM
Building Hours
You can reach office personnel Monday through Friday from 7:15 AM – 4:00 PM. The best way to reach teachers is through e-mail, but you can also call the office and we can get them the message.
Finding Information
The District website is: kcsd.k12.or.us. On the top right there is a link “Our Schools” click here and select Brixner Jr High. This will bring you to our school website where you will find out about school activities, student handbooks, lunch menus and a multitude of other topics.
Also on our website you can find access to your students’ schedules and grades by clicking on the quick link icon on the left. Then click on the Parent Portal link, and you can create your account through PowerSchool.
Attendance
It is extremely important for children to be in school everyday. Students with sporadic attendance are far more likely to earn lower grades and more likely to drop out of school. Parents/guardians are required to call the office no later than 9:00 AM each day they are out or your child will be marked as an unexcused absence. If your child is going to be out over three consecutive days for medical issues a doctor’s note is helpful. Students who skip class are considered truant and will be assigned Wednesday School. Wednesday School takes place in our library from 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM. Students with unexcused absences are not eligible to participate in practices or events that day and absences could effect playing time in games.
Tardy Policy
Students need to be to school on time in the mornings. They have 5 minutes between passing periods which is plenty of time to do what is needed and be in class ready to go. Students who are tardy receive lunch detentions that day or the next school day. If a student receives a fourth tardy they will be assigned a Wednesday School and then the count starts over. Wednesday School is in our library from 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM.
Homework
Every student will receive weekly planners in which they are expected to write down the daily activity for their classes at the beginning of each class, and in Math classes they will review their grades and assignments and calculate their current GPA weekly. On Thursday students will be required to take the planners home and get parent/guardian signatures and turn them in on Friday. This is how Advisory will be graded, which is a pass/fail grade. The purpose of this is to keep students organized on the week’s work and to be a communication tool for parents/guardians. Some school work is done on-line through Schoology, and students will have access to this using electric devices. Students will be given their own user names and passwords to access Schoology which shows all of their classes and assigned/graded work. Parents can access this information as well through our website as mentioned under finding information. If you are having issues with this please call the school for help! We highly recommend parents keep up on this regularly.
Fees
Fees can be paid at any time but preferable to get this done before school starts. You can do this during office hours. We will also have a “Business Day” for parents/guardians to come in and pay off fees and/or complete paperwork. We will have additional staff here on this day to help support this process.
Student Body Card is $5.00. This covers locks and student council materials which includes dance decoration and food, and prizes for assemblies. PE Uniforms are $25.00. Replacement uniforms are $25.00. Yearbooks are optional and are $30.00. If a student loses their lock, a $10.00 fee will be charged to their account
Chromebook use is free and they are kept in classes. Students may check one out after school through Mrs. Crowder for the night, but need to return them the following school day to Mrs. Crowder before school starts. Damaged/lost Chromebooks can range from $25.00 to $250.00.
Weather, Emergencies and School Closures
If there is a concern, such as extreme weather, public announcements will be made on all local TV and radio stations and the “One Call Now” system as soon as the decision to close school has been made. That usually happens by 6 AM. Please DO NOT call the stations, they will announce it as soon as they are notified. Please DO NOT call the school. If it has not been announced on TV, radio, or “One Call Now” we will be having school on the normal schedule for that day.
Cafeteria/Outside Food and Drinks
A nutritious breakfast and lunch is offered each school day. All meals are FREE to ALL students at Brixner Junior High. We strongly discourage caffeine and energy drinks and prefer they are not to be brought to school at all. NO food or drinks (except water) is allowed in classrooms. Brixner will not be accepting any outside food deliveries (Uber Eats/Door Dash, etc). OUTSIDE DELIVERIES WILL BE DENIED.
Dress Code
All clothing shall be worn in a reasonable manner that does not expose midriffs (stomach or back), undergarments, underwear or overexposure of private areas. We are prepping our students to be college or career ready so we do not allow pajama pants (flannel material). Clothing depicting alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, profanity, weapons, lewdness or violence is also not acceptable. Drawing or painting on any body parts or clothing will also not be permitted.
Please help us with this by checking your student’s clothing before they leave for school. If students get “dress coded” they have options: 1) they can change into their PE clothing, 2) choose from our clothing closet, 3) or call home for parent/guardian to bring appropriate attire. A visual guide will be posted our website.
Cell Phone and Electronics
Students are to have their cell phones or electronic devices stored in their locker during the school day (first to last bell). They may not use their phone during passing periods or lunch. Students that need to call or contact home may use the office phone or request from office staff to retrieve their cell phone from their locker and come to the office and call or text home.
First through third violations will result in confiscation and students can get them back at the end of the day, in the office.
A fourth cell phone violation (and any after that) will result in the parent/guardian to come pick it up from our office. We will ask that the cell phone is not brought back to school OR if the student must have their phone at school, it will be dropped off in the morning to the office where it will be stored and students can pick it up at the end of the day.
Backpacks or Bags
These are to stay in lockers during the day, they are not to be taken to classes. This includes mini backpacks and purses.
Medication
If your student requires any medication while at school we must have a form filled out prior to him or her taking the medication.
Medications must be in original containers; we cannot dispense any medication that comes to us in plastic bags or any other non-original container. This applies to over-the-counter and prescription medications including: inhalers, cough drops, and pain relievers.
Grading
The grading scale is:
A=90% and higher
B=80-89%
C=70-79%
D=60-69%
F=0-59%
Grades are compiled on an 18-week semester and progress reports are published every 6 weeks. However, grades are cumulative within the semester. Parents can access grades online with a username and password supplied by the office. Students who participate in athletics and activities must meet KCSD academic eligibility requirements.
Student Conduct
The district has authority at any school-related activity, including behavior outside of school that impacts the school environment, regardless of time or location, and while being transported in district vehicles. Further details may be found in the KCSD Student Handbook.
We are excited to welcome you to the upcoming 2026/2027 school year.
